Daniel McDonald, Scientific Director, oversees the scientific program of The Microsetta Initiative / the American Gut Project. Daniel holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He specializes as a developer using popular microbiome software packages such as QIIME 2, and has published numerous peer-reviewed research papers in the microbiome field.

Daniel sees outreach in science as a powerful tool and a tremendous amount of fun. “It’s incredible how people perk up when you open a talk with a call to action requesting their poop!” This academic and general outreach is one of the many facets of this project that interests Daniel. That, and an endless combination of poop, robots, and supercomputers.
